The Guitar Music of South America and Spain

Music • Acoustic
South Australia

Spanish and Latin American guitar music have had a close symbiotic relationship ever since the early 16th century when Spanish conquistadors introduced various chordophones (guitar-like instruments) such as the vihuela to South America. The guitar has an incredibly long, rich and diverse history in both regions.

With this show guitarists Rafael Godoy and Aloysius Leeson aim to celebrate some of this diverse music and introduce people to some less well known corners of the repertoire.

The show will feature works by Antonio Lauro, Gentil Montaña, José Luis Merlín, Rodrigo Riera, Raúl Borges, Alonso Mudarra, Fernando Sor, Gerardo Nuñez, Octavio Vazquez and Aloysius Leeson.

Presented by: Rafa Godoy and Aloysius Leeson

Aloysius Leeson has been infatuated with classical and flamenco guitar for most of his life, leading to studies at the Elder Conservatorium and time in Spain following the traditional apprenticeship of accompanying singers and dancers.

Venezuelan born guitarist Rafa Godoy is the grandson of iconic Colombian composer Rafael Godoy Lozano. At 19 years of age he moved to Sydney, Australia, where he studied classical guitar and composition. He furthered his studies at the Elder Conservatorium researching Venezuelan and Latin American classical guitar.

"Rafa Godoy and Aloysius Leeson could well have given another couple of shows to full houses judging by their audience’s enthusiasm." - The Advertiser
