Classical Indian Hindu Temple Dance

Bharata Natyam orginated 3000 years ago in the South Indian Hindu Temples.  The dance was a prayer expressed through powerful footwork, elegant hand gestures and vibrant facial expressions.  Shakti, the dancing phoenix brings to you the sheer joy and energy of the dance.

Born in Japan to an Indian father & a Japanese mother, her mother, VasantaMala was the first Japanese woman to bring Indian Classical Dance to Japan. Shakti was trained in dance by her mother and yoga by her father. She got her MA from Columbia University, New York in Indian Philosophy which is at the basis of all her dances. She has created a unique hybrid of dance combining her 2 cultures with the 3rd culture she was educated in. She has performed worldwide to critical acclaim in major theatres such as Lincoln Center NY, Berkley Zellerbach, Russian Concert Hall, Lenin Theatre, New National Theatre Tokyo as well as Edinburgh Fringe who called her "Queen of the Fringe" and awarded her "Spirit of the Fringe" 2 times.
