Isn’t it great when you go watch an Adelaide Fringe show, not knowing exactly what to expect and walking out with one of the biggest smiles on your face that you’ve ever had? This is how I felt after watching Godz. And, although these guys’ interpretation of the Greek gods was different to what I learned in school, it’s far more enjoyable (and revealing) than anything you’re going to find in a history book! In the Garden of Unearthly Delights sits The Vault, a large half golf ball-shaped structure that looks more like Disneyworld’s Epcot Centre than anything resembling a vault. This beautifully airconditioned, comfortable theatre space is probably my favourite venue at the Fringe and is home to the four Greek Godz in the show. Apollo, Dionysus, Cupid and Hercules welcome us to the show with a set of eye-popping acrobatic displays that will leave you sitting on the edge of your seat; they perilously balance on chairs, a ladder and each other as they entertain the crowd throughout the fast-paced 60-minute performance. Godz is a show that I can’t help but marvel at and which very few acts can pull off. The ability to totally excel in your field as an acrobat, as well as be able to entertain a crowd and keep them laughing is by no means easy, but this acrobatic troupe do it with ease. They rely on the audience’s energy to carry them through the difficult stunts and bring the laughs with a very cheeky display of plate shuffling. And I can’t finish the review without mentioning these Godz chiselled physiques, the type of bodies that left my seeodetreview buddy Bec drooling and me sucking in my gut. But, as I discovered, it’s hard to suck in your gut, laugh and be aghast at the same time! FIVE STARS *****
