The Mercury was opened by Queen Elizabeth II in 1992. The 186-seat bricks-and-mortar theatre has been a unique screen home to screen culture in South Australia for over 30 years. In the same building you’ll find the intimate 36-seat Iris Cinema, and our foyer with candy bar and licensed bar.
The Mercury will be an ideal performance venue for stand-up comedy and smaller one-person shows, especially those incorporating projection as we can project directly onto the cinema screen behind if required. The Iris is far more intimate and would be ideal for small-scale one-person or more intimate theatre pieces. The screens can be covered in curtains if needed, or utilised in the venue hire.
Whilst not a traditional theatre space, both The Mercury and The Iris will be perfect for Fringe productions with lesser technical requirements. Each hire will include a staff person running the front bar, who can also operate the box office, and is experienced in box office and customer service.
