Pride and Prejudice - The tense romance of Austen.

Pride and Prejudice

‘It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife’.  With these words Austen ushers us into one of the most delightful romances ever written.  It is a truth less universally acknowledged that in the romantic world of Austen, marriage was a market where everyone had a value and the price of missing marriage was dependency or destitution.  Mr Bennett has made no provision for his five daughters and Mrs Bennett must help them find their way in the most perilous of settings for girls with no fortune or title – the marriage market.   This production honours the delight of Austen’s language, characters and classic romance while its setting in an Art Gallery, where every lot has a value, adds a fresh twist to her classic tale.

  • It's a gentle adaptation that brings a new angle to the ‘marriage market’ of the day, with strong performances from everyone... - Mark Wickett, Stage Whispers
