Mutating Roots

Circus
World Premiere
Haunted by ghostly characters, condemned by ancient misdemeanours and outcast to wander the world between the restrained and the outlandish, Mayu explores a Japanese woman's identity away from her cultural home through extreme physical challenges of circus and movement.

She must navigate assumptions and stereotypes, both cultural and gendered, finding herself becoming a cross cultural being, and then, a lost cultural being.

Playing with ideas of what it is to be an absent Japanese woman in her cultural home and a Japanese woman in Australia, this strange and otherworldly performance will shatter expectations of how this woman should behave.
