La Belle France
Deux Vieux Copains (Two Old Mates) present a selection from the hundreds of wonderful French songs that they have sung over the past 60 years. Chris Simpson and Andrew McKenzie have been regular performers in Allliance Française and Panache Adelaide French Theatre productions for decades, and have an extensive knowledge of many French musical traditions, in particular the chanson française tradition which flourished in the cafes and cabarets of Montmartre and the Left Bank of Paris after World War II. Their repertoire ranges from traditional French songs to songs which celebrate the rich regional variety of France to songs by major French singer songwriters - Brassens, Brel, Vian and many others. Songs will be presented in English, sung in French and supported by surtitles.
Presented by: Deux Vieux Copains
Chris Simpson and Andrew McKenzie met in 1965 while studying French at Adelaide University. Both became French teachers and enjoyed long and successful careers in education, Chris in the Education Department, Andrew mainly at St Peter's College. They were able to combine their love of singing with their deep interest in French, performing over many years at Alliance Française cultural events and cabarets, and in more recent years, with Panache Adelaide French Theatre. They specialise in singing traditional and regional French songs, along with many of the best known songs from the post-war Parisian cabaret/music hall scene, songs by Brassens, Brel, Vian, Béart and many other singer-songwriters. Now retired from teaching, they continue to pursue musical interests in these and other fields.
