“ It takes a brave soul to consider playing the piccolo and a person of questionable character to love it” - Nicole Chamberlain

Melanie Walters and her piccolo return to the Adelaide Fringe festival with a new concert of music for the much-maligned little instrument. The program of music by living composers will include works by Martin Bresnick, Amanda Harberg, and Nicole Chamberlain.

★★★★★ The Serenade Files, 2022

★★★★★ The Advertiser, 2021 - “This highly original program was superbly played by Walters, whose command of the tonal possibilities of this underrated instrument is truly exceptional.”

Presented by: Melanie Walters

Melanie Walters’ performance career includes playing beer bottles and party whistles on ABC Classic, performing in an ensemble dressed in paper in a Massachusetts art gallery, and marching in the 2000-piece band at the Sydney Olympics. Influenced by her misspent youth playing in flute ensembles and hammering out modernist music on the piano, she now specialises in performing 20th and 21st Century flute music.
She received a Dean’s Commendation for her PhD in flute performance and has performed for organisations including Musica Viva, Bang on a Can, COMA, and the Australian Flute Festival. As well as playing regularly as principal flute of the Adelaide Wind Orchestra, she can often be heard making strange, improvised sounds in venues like The Metro, and on ThreeD Radio.
