Can you believe the original Shrek movie is more than 20 years old? An iconic Disney film with multiple sequels and spin-offs, beloved by many. And although it’s had many iterations, Shreklesque, a parodic burlesque at this year’s Adelaide Fringe is an original take on the classic.

The clever folk at Trigger Happy Productions have brought this hilarious night of frivolity to Gluttony for a short run. With a cast of ‘All-Star’ burlesque and drag performers bringing to life the magic of the original Shrek narrative with an adult twist, it’s sure to be one to return to Fringe audiences in the future.

To give you a taste, Shrek introduces himself with a feather fan dance, only to later rip off his clothes to reveal the tassels underneath. The thunderous applause was enough to make you feel “ogre”joyed. From here the parodies continue with Lord Farquad, Princess Fiona, Pinocchio, Gingerbread Man and more of the favourites many grew up with or watched with their kids at the turn of the century.

It's easy to see why Shreklesque has become such a sell-out hit. It doesn’t take itself too seriously, but the performances are first class. The crowd oscillated between screaming for more, laughing until their belly hurt and being dazzled as each act seamlessly segued into another.

A brilliantly executed, side-splittingly funny show that fans will be begging to return next year.
