Mark this on your list to check out at this year’s Fringe Festival. It is great, no it is fantastic, to be amongst a large group of people experiencing live music. 27 Club celebrates the legacy left behind from some of music’s most influential rockers compiled in to one hour of back to back hits featuring Kevin Mitchell (Jebediah, Bob Evans), Sarah McLeod (The Superjesus), Carla Lippis, Dusty Lee Stephenson and his band the Wanderers. The 27 Club is a term coined by Kurt Cobain’s mother on hearing of her son’s passing and this ‘club’ of Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Amy Winehouse, Jim Morrison, Robert Johnson and Kurt Cobain all died before their twenty eighth birthday, not the club anyone wants to be a part of. Each one of these rockers has a tragic tale and experiencing this show like this gives music fans a chance to keep their legacy and their music alive. The way this collective combines makes for one formidable force and I don’t think I would ever hear Kevin Mitchell deliver a mind blowing cover of Nirvana’s 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' or Carla Lippis mesmerise the crowd with a stellar version of 'Lithium'. Hot damn! Dusty Lee Stephenson might be an unassuming talent but he packs plenty of swagger and rips through The Doors 'Break On Through (To The Other Side)'. Sarah McLeod! What can I say! She is amazing and seems to be born for these shows rocking her way through 'Mercedes Benz' and 'Piece Of My Heart'. There’s plenty of great music to enjoy, groove to in your seat and the narrative that runs through each song gives great context and music history appreciation to the younger music fans who will come along and enjoy this show just as much as us oldies!
