The 7-piece French cabaret group Les Flaneurs Volants are back for a third season in a multi-lingual love story, and in the case of bandmate Anne-Marie multi-instrumental – she whips out the Güiro, Tamborine and Violin which she plays exquisitely. From the get-go we are treated to a cruisy French sway of sounds, a relaxingly mediterranean audible vibe and anxiety-reducing vocals – grab yourself some bubbles, sit back and enjoy! Will our lead character Jacques find the Sally to his Harry, the Edith for his Marcel? You’ll find out verse by verse. If you don’t understand the words to all the French tunes – no worries, there’s a translation screen. I can’t promise that will relieve all your confusions throughout, the combination of Jacques’ French accent and soft spokenness can lose his narrative but his comrades onstage do help relay his love-story journey – a retrospective we embark on with him for the evening. The audience is treated its first costume change by the lead crooner Jacques after his very first number – and he continues to entertain with as many costume changes as a Madonna concert, albeit more subtle. The encore song (yes you get one if you chant enough) is quite a catchy nostalgic delight to take Jacques out on – and tops off what is pleasant humour, some good tongue-in-cheek and a few great “dad-jokes” – and I love a good “dad-joke”! My lasting thought of the evening? Why did Jacques put cacti in his underwear to protect himself… from cacti? I’m sure that’s an allegory somewhat – but you’ll have to go give the show a viewing yourself to find out.
