Devi Telfer is a Kaurna-Narungga performance maker. Her show Song Revisited, which premiered at the 2021 Adelaide Fringe, is beautiful, poetic, passionate, honest and strong.
Devi Telfer’s intimate work enters previously unexplored territory in a structure that is both mesmerising and confronting.
Audiences are asked to bring a small stone. Each stone is placed in a circle at audience members feet. Within the circle of stones Devi shares stories of family, history, trauma, her need to break connections to find her own path and the joy of a good of a cup of tea.
At times audience members become part of the story in a simple, non threatening way. Devi moves in the space with grace, her voice sometimes gentle sometimes raw. No two shows were the same as Devi responded to the each different qualities of each audience.
I have never experienced work like this before. It continues to resonate with me.
Devi’s previous study and work in dance and film is evident. Devi’s previous one-woman show ‘Song’, the story of a girl, a bird and a teapot’ premiered to critical acclaim at the Brisbane Powerhouse In 2015 and 2016 Adelaide’s Spirit.
Song Revisited was a highlight of the First Nations Hub at Tandanya National Aboriginal Cultural Institute the First Nations Hub for the 2021 Fringe adding to the extraordinary four week program of dance, comedy, visual arts, cabaret and theatre at this renowned. venue.
