The ridiculously talented husband-and-wife team that brought us the acclaimed Love Life Laundry are premiering their brand new show, SPYHARD. I had high expectations after seeing Love Life Laundry, and wow, did this show live up to them! Anthony and Fay — sorry, agents Antonio and Faytasha — bring the same polish and sense of fun to this brand new show.

They combine acrobatics, aerial stunts, breakdancing and flamenco with a storyline that is both dramatic and hilarious as they take the mickey out of classic spy films. The acrobatics and aerial routines in particular are on point, very slick and well-rehearsed. They use these to tell the story, through a hilarious camouflage routine using tiny leafy branches, to a suspense-filled infiltration of an enemy facility, to a dramatic rooftop escape. The voice over, acting as Intelligence to Agent Antonio, was a nice touch, moving the storyline while also hilariously commenting on spy movie tropes (such as an excessive number of laser sensors guarding a hallway).

As we’ve seen in other Circus Sorbet offerings, this show includes humour and storyline to carry the impressive stunts of the show. Anthony and Fay are both masters of their craft, and the way they work together shows the trust and sync they have with each other — the perfect team. The intimacy of the Ukiyo tent in Gluttony only emphasised this team’s control and skill in their routines.

It’s the final week of the Fringe — if you can only squeeze in one more show, make sure it’s this one.
