There are plenty of 'circus shows' at the Adelaide Fringe, but there's only one Infamous!
Infamous is an Ashton Family Circus production that brings together the biggest, best, and brightest talents (some from their very own family) to create a spectacular night filled with action, laughs, and death-defying acts that will leave you squirming in your seat.
Infamous is essentially the entire Adelaide Fringe packed into one two-hour show. Situated away from the busy and often crowded east end of Adelaide city, you'll find this giant red and white tent on West Terrace (west of Adelaide city). This works to Infamous' advantage, as the producers have control of the venue and the jaw-dropping acts that take place inside it. I'd heard a lot about this show's 'wheel of death' apparatus, but nothing could have prepared me for seeing it live. This giant, metallic monster was a sight to behold, and the performers circling about inside gave me heart palpitations as they jumped, skipped, and sat on the shoulders of another person while it swung in the air. That was only the FIRST ACT, mind you. Throughout the 120 minutes, I saw stunts and acrobatics that I'd never seen before. From unicycling on a slackline to duo silk routines and some jaw-dropping trapeze acts, Infamous seemed too big and too polished to be part of the Adelaide Fringe. These performers were the best of the best, and they proved it!
That said, there was one thing that irked me slightly. When I think of Ashton Circus, the words illustrious, elite, prestigious, and classy come to mind. So, the constant use of a fake rubber phallic appendage throughout the show somewhat frustrated me. I'm no prude when it comes to entertainment for adults, but these performers were entertaining and funny enough that I didn't think it was necessary. That issue aside, Infamous ticked all the boxes for a great night out. It's more than just an Adelaide Fringe show; it's an Adelaide SPECTACLE!
****1/2 Four and a half stars.
