Firstly, a big thanks to the Fringe team for sending us a pass to cover the season! The hilarious, smash-hit, internationally acclaimed, multi-sellout Fringe phenomenon is back in Adelaide to help you enjoy Shakespeare responsibly!

For a third year in a row, we had the pleasure of seeing Sh!t-Faced Shakespeare at the Garden of Unearthly Delights. Based on the 450 people huddled at The Roundhouse on a Sunday evening, clearly everyone else was eagerly awaiting to see the tipsy thespians mumble their way through a sonnet! In previous years, we got to see the team's interpretations of Romeo and Juliet and Macbeth, and this time around is the lesser-known A Midsummer Night's Dream. After witnessing the chaos, the title really should be "A Midsummer Night's Fever Dream!"

As per the gimmick, one of the cast members gets to perform with way too high of a blood alcohol level, with hilarity ensuing. To be expected, there was definitely some accidental improvisation from the intoxicated performer, which for the most part led to some gut-busting comedy. The running gag of going to spy school and koalas with chlamydia was certainly not on the Shakespearian bingo card! However, some of the off-book commentary did go a bit too long, which made the story itself feel a bit incoherent.

That being said, you can absolutely tell that the team are absolute professionals and work very well together. The way they played off being referred to by their actual names or incorporating the improv into their dialogue was nothing short of impressive and hysterical. Having not known much of the story of A Midsummer Night's Dream, it was a bit tricky to piece together the sequences, but then again, we're not exactly viewing the Shakespeare Company.

Overall, Sh!t-Faced Shakespeare's triumphant return to the Fringe with A Midsummer Night's Dream brought plenty of laughs, even if some of the improvisation went a bit too long. I can still absolutely recommend seeing the show during the last week of Fringe season!
