In Session debuted at Sydney Fringe to sell out audiences. The premise is simple, Xi and Saria take turns playing the role of the therapist and client on stage; each drawing from their own personal, clinical and creative experiences. What results is an immersive and intimate experience which allows audiences to experience the intimacy of a therapy room. Xi and Saria were inspired by Fritz and Laura Perl’s live therapy performances in front of audiences in the 1950s, however wanted to safely and ethically bring this experience to the modern world. After the 50 minute therapy session, Xi and Saria present a 30-minute Q-A session to share insights into their creative and clinical processes.

Saria Green is a Clinical Psychologist from Sydney with an experience in schema therapy and a creative background including spoken word poetry, choral singing, dance and musical theatre. Saria played our client (Hazel) on the night reviewed. Hazel draws on Saria’s personal experiences, as well as clients she has worked with in the past. Initially, Hazel presents a strong and independent woman however throughout the session Xi gently guides her to reflect on her childhood experiences and explore how this impacts her in the present day.

Xi Liu is also a Clinical Psychologist from Sydney with significant experience in schema therapy. Schema therapy aims to identify and change ingrained patterns and complex challenges stemming from childhood. Xi played our therapist on the reviewed night, showcasing their gentle and empathetic approach to carefully navigate Hazel through a significant experience in her teenage years which impacted how she interacted with loved ones in her adult life.

Xi and Saria have developed an immersive and insightful experience, allowing the mentally health curious and literate alike to peek behind the closed doors of the therapy room, demystifying the process and possibly providing vicarious healing to those watching.
