Kath & Kim is a TV show that has a special place in the hearts of many Australians, and has become a cornerstone of Australian pop culture since its first episode aired in 2002. While there are plenty of parodies of all sorts showing at this year’s fringe, Fountain Lakes: A Very Foxy Parody Musical is the parody musical you never knew you needed.
As well as iconic characters struggling through their trademark issues (Kim debating whether or not to divorce Brett, Sharon’s many sports injuries and floundering love life, and Kel’s special anniversary sausage, to name a few), the show features songs that fit the theme so well, they could have been written for the original TV show. From the 80s fitness pop tune to accompany Kel’s power walk, to Kim’s Britney-esque ‘Hornbag’, to others accompanied by a digital keyboard backing that sounds like the instrument might have lived in Kath’s attic for 40 years, the songs set the perfect tone for the show.
The nuance of each character’s performance is impressive, not only in the particular ocker accent we all know so well, but also in small details like the way a character walks, their posture, and little gestures that we don’t even realise are iconic elements of these characters. The performers have studied these characters down to the finest detail, and they hit the mark every time.
Do yourself a favour and check out these hunk-a-spunks and hornbags in a musical that is noice, different, and just a bit unusual.
