Jenny Tian is work-shopping her new show Jenny’s Travels at Adelaide Fringe in 2025. For those who follow her popular videos on social media or have seen her previous shows, this is a welcome sneak peak.
Though Tian apologetically describes her show as “being in previews”, and refers to notes to ensure she hits all her punchlines during the show, this does not detract from the audience’s enjoyment. In fact, it allows her improv skills to shine. She can take the audience’s lukewarm reaction to a joke and create a riotous one liner. “That’s alright, I don’t need your applause, I’m an iPhone user, I clap for myself,” she quips.
Tian has the impressive ability to weave together seemingly random stories to create a meaningful tapestry – following her personal journey of wanderlust and self discovery, as she dreams of overseas travel.
Born in Finland to Chinese parents, and growing up in Sydney, Tian shares tales of her strict childhood and relationship with her parents – her “supreme mother” and her father “who is also there”. She has a charming bluntness and unabashed humour as she recalls freezing her eggs, anecdotes from her awkward housemate, and her sexual misadventures. She shares her opinion of Chinese stereotypes and her autism questionnaire results.
Tian is fun and relatable, the kind of person with whom you want to share cocktails. For a surprisingly heartfelt show that will leave you in stitches, look no further.
