If you’ve ever been curious about the world of drag kings, then Jimmy Finger’s show is one hell of introduction. With no filter, no brakes, and no holding back, Jimmy Finger is a character that you’re not likely to soon forget.
Jimmy is the high octane motorhead from the Finger family and tells his life story with plenty of enthusiasm. He has a thirst for adrenaline (which his therapist has told him is a coping mechanism) and he’s not afraid of diving into life full throttle through both his riding and his sexual escapades. He doesn’t hold himself to labels as he attempts to woo all members of his crowd with audience participation a key part of the show.
I don’t know what the world record for finger related jokes in a show is, but this one has to come close. With all the subtly of a sledgehammer, Jimmy uses plenty of puns and innuendo that leaves the audience in stitches. Props also add colour to performance with a gleaming bike handlebar attached to Jimmy’s hips and also some interesting uses of Cheezles and ping pong balls. Jimmy also performs a very erotic scene on stage that may leave more conservative audience members feeling a bit uncomfortable, but was met with enthusiastic laughter from the crowd at this performance.
But it isn’t all fun and games, with the crescendo of the show coming in the form of Jimmy’s accident. This heartbreaking event is a crucial moment in Jimmy’s life as he realises he doesn’t need to keep seeking the approval of others, and that the only one who is able to fill the hole in him is himself. This then flows into a fantastically performed final number that underneath the silly lyrics has an important message. The song has a beautiful melody and shows off the voice talents of the one who brings Jimmy to life, Zo Star.
While this show is not for everyone, it’s a high energy ride that tells a familiar and touching story about someone coming to terms with their inner struggles with plenty of laughs along the way.
