Gospo Collective: Sip and Saaaaang
Arkaba Hotel, Monday March 10 2:00pm
Thank God for the air-conditioned comfort of the Arkaba Hotel on a scorching Monday afternoon.
What could we expect from “Char” Jones? If previous performances are anything to go by…the Whitney show and the Jackson show…then nothing short of excellence.
The house was full of parents, fans and devotees, who participated, clapped and sang along to most of the songs.
The show opened with a 30 strong group of choristers assembling on the somewhat small stage, together with 10 principals that dominated the sound with gorgeous harmonies and a precise, synchronized choreography that screamed a concentrated rehearsal program.
From the catchy “The Way You Make Me Feel” to the crowd participation gem “All You Need Is Love”, the sound was exhilarating.
“I Don’t Wanna Love Nobody But You” saw the introduction of 20 “little people” onto the crowded stage, who all pulled their weight and added a cute factor to the show that delighted both parents and grandparents alike.
“Just the Two Of Us” and “You’re the Voice” showcased complex harmonies and subtle key shifts, followed by “He Like”.
The Whitney Houston song “Didn’t We Have It All” displayed a nicely layered texture, with the principals taking turns to solo against a colourful, powerful choral backdrop. These voices were skillfully interwoven into the fabric of the arrangements, always with the very talented Charmaine, front and centre, singing, dancing, leading.
“My Love is Your Love” rounded out what was an excellent show.
Despite some final song page turning issues, nothing detracted from what was an outstanding performance from all participants. Each performer enthusiastically embraced the limelight with passion and commitment.
The Gospo Collective is an academy of excellence and Charmaine Jones is a South Australian treasure. For that, we should all be very grateful.
