Sydney-based creators Freya Moore and Robbie Alexander (who also star in the show) have ambitiously brought their, still quite new, comedy show to the Adelaide 2025 Fringe, albeit to a venue a little way outside of the (Adelaide Central Business) District 12. Their zany parody of a certain franchise is also decentralising of its source, adding so many other pop, game and internet culture references that you needn’t be a diehard HG fan to understand all the references. There are two hours of high paced material, including 18 original songs, which means that if you miss a reference or two, or if a joke doesn’t land on you, there will be numerous more for you to catch, so various segments of the audience will be laughing at different times. High school to young adult audiences will likely be the demographic laughing the most, as this seems to be the target audience. In fact the show crackles throughout with a vibrant and youthful exuberance, as the cast are all quite young. The show surprises with where it takes its breaths of gravitas and sincerity to play its comedy against, with some impressive vocals and surprisingly spellbinding harmonies and duets. A middle of show intermission, gave me a chance to take a breath, collect my over stimulated brain, and be a little more prepared for the 2nd half. It’s a big cast to bring out to Adelaide, but most of the characters do get their chance in the limelight, or to bust out a big song and dance number. The shows creators play the main protagonist Katniss (Freya Moore), and Robbie Alexander, plays the show stealing Drag-Queen-Effie-Trinket-host character who demonstrates the largeness and presence of character combination that work best in this context. Madelaine Palmer was often hilarious as Prim, such a goofy, silly and fun show. Don’t wait till they pull up your number, get out of your district and go see it!
