Review: Guy Williams – ‘If you mildly criticise me I’ll say it’s cancel culture and turn to the alt right’

Trigger warning for show: Occasional extreme profanity

If you are the kind of person who is easily offended then this is not the show for you. Absolutely nothing is off limits for Guy Williams as he pokes fun at both sides of political spectrum while insisting he’s just trying to be more ‘observational’.

Right from the start Guy lets his viewers know this is not going to be the most cohesive show. His ADHD leaves him jumping around topics frequently before he wonders how he got onto jokes about New Zealand’s two neighbouring Countdown stores from Katy Perry’s ‘Dark Horse’. No one is safe from Guy’s jabs as Kayne West, The Guardian, and Jared from Subway all get a (dis)honourable mention in the show and he’s not afraid to get into the heavy topics such as Australia’s historical treatment of Indigenous people. Since Guy is a Kiwi he of course also can’t help but make a few well aimed insults at us Aussies, with one or two stirring up some disapproval from the crowd much to Guy’s glee.

And just in case the show wasn’t head spinning enough, Guy closes with a critique of Cat Stevens’ ‘(Remember the days of the) old school yard’ – which was a hilarious and unique perspective on the song which had nothing to do with the rest of the show.

While subjects such as mental health and trauma are poked light at during the show (he is a comedian after all), Guy does make some good points amongst the laughter. He highlights how big world events like 9/11 are a collective trauma on society and how current events and the way the news is reporting on them is damaging people’s mental health. But Guy’s show is a good reminder that when the world feels crazy it’s important to have a good laugh.

All in all it’s a show that’s not meant to be taken too seriously and is certainly an hour well spent. While Guy’s final show of the Fringe is already sold out, he’s sure to make another return next year with a whole new whirlwind of a show that will leave you in stitches.
