Paranormal enthusiasts and skeptics alike are invited to spill the tea at the South Australian premiere of interactive storytelling experience ‘Tales From The Other Side’.

Hosted by stand-up comedian and ghost tour co-ordinator Sarah Stewart; the show unfolds in the intimate surroundings of the Tea Room at Curiositeas, a quaint little tea shop nestled above a boutique clothing store on bustling Rundle Street. Sadly, the venue's only access appears to be via two sets of long, narrow staircases and this limits the show's accessibility to a wider audience.

The small, candle-lit space creates a relaxed atmosphere where performer and audience can enjoy a drink and connect through a shared love of ghosts and spooky happenings; while the building's historic architecture perfectly complements the overall theme of the show.

‘Tales From The Other Side’ is inspired by Sarah’s own spooky experiences, many of which she shares throughout the show. A natural storyteller, her stories are evocative and thought-provoking and many are sure to raise the hairs on your neck. Between each spine-tingling story, Sarah explores Adelaide’s own rich ghost and hauntings history as well as some interesting facts and statistics about death which are sure to raise an eyebrow or two.

With her warm and welcoming personality, Sarah has a genuine interest in hearing other people’s stories and this was evident in the way she wandered among the audience before the show (26 February), introducing herself and encouraging us to share stories of our own. Her use of open-ended questions acts as a natural segue between her own stories, providing plenty of opportunities for audience members to share their beliefs and experiences with the room.

‘Tales From The Other Side’ is limited to 30 people at most (per session) and this, coupled with the intimate setting of the room, really encourages audience participation. You can share your story from the comfort of your seat without the nerve-wracking experience of being on stage and the entire experience feels more like a book club meeting or catch-up with friends than a Fringe show. As a believer, it is always thrilling to hear others' experiences with the paranormal and this element of audience participation adds a fun sense of spontaneity to the show, as there is no way of knowing what you will hear each night.

For this reviewer, the hour passed by far quicker than I would have liked, and even Sarah expressed her disappointment that the night had to end. Whether you are a believer or just love a good story, ‘Tales From The Other Side’ is a great way to enjoy the Fringe without the hustle and bustle of the larger shows.
