Review: AFTER HOURS CABARET CLUB – LOCK IN
Gluttony Hillside Theatre

What the @$%^&* did I just watch?
An articulate small jazz combo welcomed us to the open air Hillside Theatre, setting a highly deceptive tone to proceedings. The MC emerged singing to “Welcome to the Jungle” (a portent of things to come) followed by Hendrix’s guitar version of Star Spangled Banner, promising the show would be wild…she was not wrong!
There were tantalising and physical burlesque performances; a brash, skilful, luminescent hula hoop act that shone against the night sky, involving a large quantity of marshmallows, and some exciting circus performers. All performances were extremely well-rehearsed and professional. The predominantly twenty-something audience received all the acts with enthusiasm, applauding generously for each.
The soundtrack was also appealing, moving from “American Woman” to “Someone Else’s Lipstick”, which sounded uncannily like Van Morrison’s “Gloria”. Other than the trumpet drowning out the MC in spots and one performer insisting she didn’t need a microphone (she did!) the sound was very effective.
The show is provocative, stylish, energetic and risqué. It is a collection of acts that don’t seem to fit into mainstream theatre, but it works!
It’s definitely R rated. It’s eminently watchable...just leave the kids at home.
It captures the spirit of vaudeville and cabaret…and then some.
