Some things in life are just… funny. LARPing (live action role playing) is one, at least to the 99.9% of the population who don’t get involved in the fake sword-wielding, costume-wearing fantasy lifestyle. Bipolar disorder (or ‘sugar-free ADHD’) and drunk fellow audience members (it’s a gin fizz thing, apparently) are not. So, it’s to Scout Boxall’s credit that this hour includes all of the above and remains slick, relatable and really very funny all round.

There’s some rather lovely writing in this tightly controlled set. Who knew ugly cheap B&B ornaments could be a thing of beauty, or a parent’s obsession with Scandi drama could be so endearing? It’s all grist to Boxall’s sharply observant mill. The habit-wearing self-confessed LARPer is also skilled; there’s real emotional jeopardy in the final third and, while mining personal trauma for laughs is practically compulsory these days (and often so very tough on audiences), Boxall brings enough light to the shade to keep it comedy. If there are moments when we feel we’re watching a one-act play rather than a stand-up set, then lucky us. It’s rare to see such rich writing with a carefully crafted emotional journey and so many laughs. Some things in life are just funny: it seems Scout Boxall is one of them.
