Let's clear one thing up before starting this review: the cast of The Black Blues Brothers is the most talented group of athletic performers we've ever had at the Adelaide Fringe. Their move set, leaping ability, and talent are fully displayed in this one-hour show that pays homage to the music from the popular 1980s movie of the same name.
What begins in a quiet bar during closing time quickly escalates into a dance party filled with music, movement, and plenty of laughs. The five guys who make up The Black Blues Brothers (do we really need "black" in the title?) provide non-stop entertainment and, believe it or not, NEVER take a break during the entire show. Even on a steaming hot night in The Virago tent, dripping with sweat and feeling the heat, the performers didn't reach for a bottle of water or even a towel. I wasn't sure whether to be impressed or rush to the back and grab something to help them out!
So, what can you expect from The Black Blues Brothers? Think solo acts of agility, multiple human pyramids, limbo dancing with a touch of fire, and aerial leaps that will leave your jaw on the floor in astonishment. There seems to be no obstacle in the world that can stand in these guys' way. From a performance perspective, The Blues Brothers is a sure-fire hit. On the show side, though, I found it a bit lacking. The transitions between the acts were oddly quiet and somewhat clunky; at times, the comedy felt a little uncomfortable, and not to harp on it, but the title seems highly unnecessary. The original movie wasn't called The White Blues Brothers!
Still, if you're looking for great family fun that will get you out of your chair, singing classic songs and witnessing the peak of physical fitness and agility, The Black Blues Brothers is a show you definitely should check out. Enjoy!
