Why I Stuck a Flare Up My Ar** For England is Billy’s story as to, well, why he stuck a flare up his arse at the 2020 (held in 2021 for obvious reason) EURO Final at Wembley. For Billy it seemed a natural thing to do.
Billy is a football (soccer) fan, as is his best mate, Adam. The love going to all the AFC Wimbledon games. They have a tradition of meeting in a café before the game, where he catches the eye of a young lady. Then on to the pub for some pints and finally to the game. Live is simple and good.
But Billy and Adam fall into the wrong crowd and it soon becomes, “Matchday, pint, pint, pint, gear (as in drugs), fight fight fight”. While Adam pulls away from this crowd, Billy goes in deeper, led on the gang’s leader “Winegum” until the twist at the end, which will leave you stunned.
The play is funny but also at times, very sombre. Alex Hill’s performance is emotional and he puts the Energiser Bunny to shame with his wild crazy energetic performance.
The play had a critically acclaimed run at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2023, as well as a U.K. run. It deserves a acclaimed run in Adelaide.
