If the Garden of Unearthly Delights is our fantasy world of fun and illusion, then David Musch’s Dream State is our gateway to the abstract storytelling of our dreams.
Located immediately inside the Garden’s East Terrace entrance, the large black installation sets the scene for an immersive experience inside. It’s an ominous curiosity that’s in-your-face yet mysterious.
Inside the hulking black structure, a series of installations, separated by thick doors, immerse you in dream states that range from nightmarish to fantastical; the harmony of nature to the wonder of the stars.
Music, soundscapes, lighting, darkness, smoke machines, mirrors, graffiti, art, and lasers combined to create each unique experience. As you wander through, all nine or so environments not only make you gasp with wonder, but their fully immersive nature lets you stay as long as you like to soak up the atmosphere, tone and sheer joy of the discovery.
The sealed doors between each dream state adds a delightful element of surprise upon entering each room. Not least of this is the recognisable elements from our own dreams and nightmares. In that sense, the personal experience of Dream State also highlights our commonalities.
Dream State is self-guided but one to take your time with. Stop and reflect, saviour each space. Look, listen and explore. As to the meaning of it all? It’s your dream. Only you can interpret it.
