CIRQUE NOCTURNE

Saturday 20th February @ Nineteen Ten Jazz & Burlesque Club

It was to be my first show of the 2021 Adelaide Fringe season and I was excited to be seeing a local production by acclaimed Adelaide circus company Cirque Nocturne, with their self-titled show. A marvellous mix of storytelling entwined with cabaret and circus acts, Cirque Nocturne is a detective story inspired by classic Film Noir films of the 1940s. Following the narration of the Private Detective, the show consisted of ten different performers showcasing their craft, from fire twirling to aerial hoop tricks and more. The execution of some of the performers was a little rusty, but others more than made up for it like the hula hoop performer, and the couple dancing and balancing with each other. My absolute highlight was the diabolo juggler who was all arms and legs yet craftily managed not to get tangled in the strings! Overall, I thought the concept of the show was great, as was the choice of venue, even though the performance space seemed small, the performers still made it work. Choice of music was superb too and added to the sultry feel of the show. And even though this wasn’t part of the show, I did shed a tear of happiness at the impromptu marriage proposal at the conclusion of the show. She said YES!

Running on Sunday 21st February
