Master of myriad weapons, this action hero is much more than a parody of man’s mania for macho dominance. Sam Dugmore has dug out more in one hour than scientific studies or journalists could, to expose what lies buried deep in every male. He delights us with a sequel on steroids, the super-silliness of it producing constant hilarity and raucous belly laughs. Yes, I too admit to laughing long and loud – a welcome shared release.
It’s a while since I’ve heard audience members in uncontrollable fits of gurgling giggling. And of course, like everything else it’s immediately incorporated into the plot. The in-house lights are up to make us part of the action, and this compounds the fun for all. We slip in and out of improvisation so fast, everyone is drawn in as extras and cannon fodder.
The body count rises exponentially, when together we willingly die many deaths to allow this maimed metaphor of a man to seek his redemption. But it’s a torturous path, harming many and losing those you come close to on the way. Slick character transformations move the story along, following the classic Hollywood hero’s journey. The compelling spell of excellent clowning culminates in some heart-wrenching songs.
These are chosen to highlight man’s difficulty in communicating his feelings, to say the words he needs to say, and maybe cry a bit, and not just cry out before moving on to the next action scene. Sam can act, dance and yes, sing superbly from his heart. The message is clear – every man can decide to go beyond dog-bonding and bromance to risk the unknown – even if it means repeated little deaths.
