Once upon a time, in a land not too far away,
A line up of drag kings and queens came to slay!
This tale is not of heroes, said to always save the day,
But of what makes a villain and why they’re here to stay!
Come one, come all, to Villains: A Dizney in Drag Parody! The unbelievably talented cast parody the best Disney characters in an attempt to fulfil the dreams of an up and coming villain. He’s evil, he’s maniacal, and he’s got a wicked laugh (sort of). It’s none other than the feared, the revered, the terrible… Phil… during his quarter life crisis.
Hosted in The Moa at Gluttony, the show brings together parodies of famous villains from nineties and noughties Disney, including Ursula, Maleficent, Captain Hook, and more! The show’s cast boast amazing musical skills, improv comedy, and crowd work, leaving audiences laughing off their chairs. You can’t help but sing, cheer, and applaud the original musical numbers and the villains behind their beauty.
A highlight of the show is Maleficent, played by the multi-talented Jae West. Her poise, class, and sass truly brings the character to life, re-telling the tale as old as time but casting it in a new light. Her skills as a dancer, singer, choreographer, and signed actor really shine through in her portrayal of the mistress of evil.
Behind the immaculate makeup, the comical jokes, and the perfectly primed costumes, the show presents a message quite unexpected. After pointing fingers at the real villains of society (AKA gender reveal parties, instagram influencers, and heteronormativity), the cast portray the true meaning of a character's journey. At the end of the day, being our authentic selves and allowing ourselves to grow is the only way we can truly fulfil our destinies, regardless if you’re a hero or a villain.
