There is nothing like a good glass of wine or an evening of good comedy. However, put the two together and you are in for a winning night of entertainment. Much loved comedian Merrick Watts is on to a real winner with his An Idiot’s Guide to Wine, so much so that this Fringe’s performance is billed as Volume Two, after the highly popular Volume One toured right around Australia, including a stop at the Adelaide Cabaret Festival in 2023. Merrick guides you through a tasting of six of his favourite wines from around Australia, mixing in facts and comedy about the varieties along the way. His wine knowledge is as impressive as his comedy. Surprising to most, Merrick has actually trained as a Sommelier, so it is no wonder Merrick’s knowledge of wine was so in depth. His comedy material is light, but extremely funny. Merrick has a captivating way of pulling the audience in — it was easy to forget you were sitting in the Spiegeltent in the middle of The Garden of Unearthly Delights and instead think you were in a classy winery doing a tasting led by Merrick. This is a wonderful way to spend just over an hour during the final few days of the Fringe. Get together with some of your wine loving friends and grab what remaining tickets you can to be led through a wine tasting with one of Australia’s best comedians.
