Mainstage at Bakehouse Theatre, Mon 8 Mar.

Jim has always wanted to do a Fringe show and a life-changing event convinced him that his time had come. Jim’s not especially talented – by his own admission – but he has a lot of nerve and he’s a very pleasant guy. He’s not completely without skills, mind you. Despite obfuscating the issue with a sloppy opening number, he has quite a reasonable voice. And he does seem to have some skills with card tricks but again he spent quite a while trying to demonstrate that he didn’t!

He is however a dreadful ventriloquist. Even his own doll/bear told him so. A few passable impersonations formed part of his stand-up segment.

And that lucky wheel of his is lucky indeed as it saved him from having to do anything too adventurous.

It’s hard to judge a show when the performer says they don’t have any skills and they’re not sure why they’re there and then kind of proves it. Certainly keeps the bar low and expectations under control. And maybe that’s the trick of it? Make sure the audience expects nothing and deliver something and they’ll go away happy. I did. I really enjoyed it. On some strange level, quite inspirational.
