Sorry Mariah: there’s a new diva in town! It takes a very special person to hype up a Tuesday night crowd, especially in the final week of the Adelaide Fringe, but it’s all in a day’s work for Leather Lungs. With cheeky wit, glamour, and a voice that deserves to fill stadiums, Leather Lungs takes you on a journey that is equally hilarious and heartfelt. The show begins with a rip-roaring rendition of the soul classic ‘Something’s Got a Hold On Me,’ introducing a one-of-a-kind, powerful voice and astounding vocal range first and foremost. After beginning with such a bang, it takes a few minutes for the show to settle into a comfortable rhythm, particularly with the ambient sound of Gluttony occasionally making it hard to hear the details. However, Leather Lung’s skill as a performer and storyteller becomes apparent as he begins to delve into stories of sex, family, insecurity, and his experiences leaving an abusive relationship. Shut Up and Sing certainly takes you on an emotional (yet supportive and safe) rollercoaster, from a rendition of ‘Old McDonald’ that devolves into barnyard chaos, to soaring ballads and poignant stories. The penultimate song of the show, The Dresden Doll’s ‘Sing', was a particularly powerful moment, summarising what was best about this cabaret: Leather Lungs sings, not just for himself, but for people who cannot stand up and sing for themselves. Do yourself a favour, go listen to him, and then maybe do the same.
