Whodoesn’t like a really good Whodunnit?!?! In English fiction, murder seems to be the national pastime with most of them taking place in the beautiful British countryside in quaint little villages such as Kembleford (Father Brown), St Mary Mead (Miss Jane Marple) and any town unlucky enough to be situated in Midsomer. There is now a new member to the flock: the aptly named Murder Village.
Improvisation is not an easy skill to master and can either be very bad or very good. Improvisedwhodunnit, a Victorian improv group (think South Australia’s Changing Jennifers) is very, very good and absolutely hilarious. They specialize in making mayhem and murder and the audience are the extremely pleased witnesses.
What is the Modus Operandi of the show – simple! Just before the audience are let into Murder Village, they are given a QR code to select, from a predetermined list of four characters, the victim and the killer, then make-up the murder weapon and the clue that will ultimately lead to the unveiling of the villain. The cast of four, Detective Owen Gullet and amateur detective Monsieur Aragon Pewter will take it from there.
Unfortunately, there is no cast list to name these very funny and talented actors, But, rest assured, these six are the Super Six of slick satire. They certainly don’t murder the comedy! This team know how to use mistakes (e.g on the night reviewed when asked if the victim always wore a hat, the suspect replied “No” – we saw the victim definitely wearing a hat lol) to the show’s advantage and carry us along with the joke – the ‘hat’ mistake became a running gag and didn’t we love it. The characterisations from all six were spot on and hilarious – beautiful comic timing from all. Let’s not forget the keyboardist at the back of the room providing atmospheric background – an unusual but welcome addition to Improv.
A quick mention about the venue, the Dom Polski Centre – they have a great way to beat boredom if you arrive too early: simply grab a drink from the bar and sit at tables loaded with games and jigsaw puzzles.
If you are a fan of murder mysteries or comedy or, even better, both then pick up your magnifying glass, put on your best deer stalker hat and travel very quickly to Murder Village. Oh, enough with the clues already – just go!!
