This interactive wine-tasting/comedy event is quite simply heaps of fun. Mixing audience participation, expert yet accessible commentary from actual real-life wine guy Henry Doyle, plenty of fun chat from hosts Sweeney Preston and Ethan Cavanagh, and five wine samples, it’s one of the best starts to any Fringe night out you could possibly have.
The In Pour Taste team have found a rich seam to mine, and the audience feel like a representative sample of most of us: folk who like wine, might want to know a little bit more about wine, but don’t want to fall down a rabbit hole of wine-w**kery. In fact, the audience are given a bell to ring if they feel things are getting too pretentious, as Doyle gets down to decoding the codes that exclude ordinary punters from trying something new in wine world. Making up our own language of wine is both a giggle and a reminder that someone, somewhere is sitting in front of a computer right now trying to find a whole new way of saying ‘this wine is nice’. Preston and Cavanagh keep the whole thing moving with easy-going crowd work and back and forth and, lest we think about getting serious for even a second, there’s a Wiggles break with every pour. Cheers!
