Donal Vaughan is back with a new science show for kids, and it’s as simple and entertaining as ever.

Much like last year’s Messy Mayhem show, the premise is simple – no flashy sets, just a man in a lab coat on a small stage ready to show kids that science is not boring. Science Magic’s new venue this year, Prompt Creative Centre on Pirie Street, is ideal for a small scale, kid-friendly show. Away from the crowds you’ll find in other Fringe venues, this is a welcoming space for young kids. Donal will even greet you at the door, make sure you know where the toilets are, and encourage the adults to grab a Mimosa from the bar (there are soft drinks and fruit juice available too!).

Crazy Gadgets centres around physics-based science experiments that you can do at home, with items you can find at home. Donal explains each experiment and demonstrates them with flair. You’ll learn how to fight off zombies using items found in the bathroom, how to put a skewer through a balloon without popping it, and how to make a really good air cannon.

Donal’s jokes are groan-worthy, but pitched perfectly at both adults and kids. He handles very young hecklers magnificently, and includes the audience where he can. A couple of lucky kids get to go on stage to help with the experiments.

Science Magic: Crazy Gadgets is a great, simple show for kids who want a taste of Fringe fun without the crowds or overwhelming productions. The bonus is, they’ll learn some science along the way too.
