It’s for artists like Jason Chasland that the star rating system fails because there simply isn’t enough to give. This cabaret comedian ticks every box from his delivery in spoken word and song, to the stereotypes he challenges around issues seen and unseen.
Like Hannah Gadsby’s Nanette, Chasland (AKA Leather Lungs) sets up his audience for some hard-hitting reality checks, particularly around homophobia, self-esteem and mental health issues, and boy does he drive them home! His sensitive delivery is faultless and powerful, told through his own horrifying experiences. Bravo for sharing such personal traumas.
The lead-in to all this are comedy routines and songs that are as outrageous as his costuming. He is quick, sick and shameless, with screams of laughter erupting from the audience every few seconds. Even during the more serious moments, he still manages to make us laugh, which in turn, makes his point even more powerful.
All that aside, Leather Lungs is known for his voice and OMFG, WHAT WAS THAT?!
To hear Leather Lungs sing is to ride a rollercoaster of sound. He soars as high as the heavens before plummeting to the very depths of hell. With a vocal range of more than four octaves, he can sing as high or low as he pleases and hold any note for as long as he likes. Magnificent! Sensational! Extraordinary! Pull out your thesaurus and insert the rest yourself.
With the sound mix sure to improve after opening night, Leather Lungs: Shut Up and Sing! moves up from seven stars to eight, but since five is the maximum, let’s keep those extra three just between us.
