WET, even the word evokes thoughts and feelings that may make some squeamish while others are intrigued, and I can tell you the ensemble for this show do not hold back on subject matter. You’d be forgiven for thinking this is just another raunchy show about women and sex, because for some part it is. However, there is much more to this piece of art than just that. The Hairy Godmothers take you on a journey about what it means to be a woman. Through a variety of artistic mediums, including soliloquy, skit, song, dance and poetry, this ensemble of players shows the audience that there is no one way to be a woman.
The show is very well rehearsed, as each player knows their place in the show extremely well. There were a couple technical issues but this didn’t deter the performers. While production value felt a little raw and underdone at times, it may have been a choice of the performers to connect with the reality of the material they were presenting.
Intellectually stimulating, heartfelt and raw, this piece of theatre acts like a feminist manifesto, prompting audience members to understand and sometimes challenge their own view of what it means to be a woman. With comedy, science, movement and a little bit of tear-jerking poetry, this show prompts us to visit come of those deep seeded stereotypes we may have and look to find our own way of being. Each cast member also shares a part of themselves in this show, making it easy to find a connection between your own life and the stories being divulged on the stage.
If you enjoy a little bit of thoughts and feelings with your comedy and fun at the fringe, this show is well worth putting on your list to visit.
