Romantic, sweet, tragic, and one heck of a rollercoaster ride of ups and downs, Lesbian Love Stories tells the anonymous true stories of queer women from around the world.
Vocallists Natasha Veselinovic, Chloe Rose Taylor, Ruby Clark, and drag pianist Peppy Smears deliver a cheeky, saucy, and liberating performance about queer women who love other queer women.
Weaved into the various love stories are a series of harmonic original songs and covers, from the likes of Mambo Number Five to Lily Allen’s F%%k You.
Initially the show feels a little bit cheesy with their first couple of opening acts of comedy, with their attempts to generate laughter from the audience falling a little short.
The intensity and overall raucousness does pick up as the show progresses however, and the use of a kazoo, triangle, and epic violin solo by Clark draws the crowd in more closely. Smears also shines with a number of cameo piano solos along the way.
Their vocals also rise to the occasion as the show progresses and they’re powerful, both throughout the high energy and more emotional pieces.
An array of diverse love stories touching on questioning one’s sexuality, denial, fear of coming out, and true queer love provide a sound representation of love between lesbians. Some of the stories also share Taylor and Veselinovic’s personal stories as fellow lesbians too, which is a lovely touch.
Veselinovic, Taylor, and Clark take it in turns to individually narrate the various stories, intertwined by the chaos of simultaneously telling multiple lesbian love stories at once. The peripheral skits and gags in the background throughout various songs make it clear that you’re in for a comedic storytelling experience.
For my fellow lesbians, these tales of women loving women will leave you feeling proud and valid afterwards. This feel-good and wholesome performance by all is a heartfelt dedication to these beautiful and queer love stories which should be heard by all.
