“Have you ever fallen for someone across the globe only to become stuck in your own country?”
Britt Plummer’s “Fool’s Paradise” is a deeply personal, brave, funny exploration of the delights and foibles of love during a time of restrictions we’d all rather forget- the 2020 Pandemic.
Central to the narrative is Britt’s love for a Swedish fellow clown, Otto and her understandably optimistic desire for an idyllic, albeit hard working, future spent together travelling the world as clowns.
As the show opens, we find ourselves involved as guests – some, participants- at a wedding rehearsal. As is a clown’s lot, Britt’s vulnerability is the source of great joy and sorrow, her emotional journey one that many can relate to. This could all be terribly serious! However, Plummer balances beautiful moments of pathos and humour in such a way as to have her audience variously laughing uproariously and tearing up! And the confetti we in attendance at the wedding rehearsal are given is a real treat!
Plummer doesn’t tiptoe around the peaks and troughs of the relationship, but plunges into them with great insight and humour.
Britt’s beau is represented by the most hilariously unlikely inanimate object! And I’ve never witnessed disposable coffee cups do the things they do when manipulated by Plummer to recreate the throes of early relationship unfettered passion!
The quaint and intimate Yurt is the perfect venue for this delightfully playful solo show.
It’s easy to see why Plummer is a multi-award-winning performer! A brilliant clown, Plummer’s physical comedy is impeccable in its negotiation of that fine line between the comedic and tragic as she makes us privy to her joys, disappointment and sorrows. This, after all, is what a great modern clown does!
“Fool’s Paradise” is well worth finding The Courtyard of Curiosities on Kintore Avenue, a refreshing little oasis away from the bustle of the Garden of Unearthly Delights and Gluttony.
Go! See it! Enjoy!
