Ben Hart began his award-winning career at seventeen and has continued to astonish audiences ever since. His credits include television, theatre, stage magic, and working as a magic consultant together with legendary duo Penn & Teller, among others. Hart brings his prowess to the stage with HEX this Fringe season. HEX does not fit into a single category, with Hart expertly interweaving spiritualism, mentalism, and classic magic. His reactions are similar to an improv comedian as he banters with and enchants the audience. He explains that “witch” is one of the many things he has been called over the years and what inspires this show, delving into the history of magic and performance. Every magic routine is narrated by Hart, providing a full and rich context (whether it is true or not.) The audience becomes invested in each trick as it unfolds. To start, Hart sprinkles in classic but beautifully executed sleight of hand card tricks among his original and unique material. The crowd is amiably entertained but not yet astonished. He continues with (possibly) the most impressive ring trick ever performed, transformation magic, and sand that can predict the future. Hart utilises everyday objects in his routines, changing an ordinary spoon, butter knife, or salt shaker into the extraordinary. “Can you imagine the life I lead? I can’t even use cutlery without mad stuff happening,” he jokes with a crooked smile. These unassuming items never fail to surprise. Most magic routines end with a joke, perfectly delivered by Hart. He has the audience laughing as we pick our proverbial jaws off the ground. Hart is generously performing HEX for the duration of the Fringe, giving us plenty of opportunities to see this breathtaking show. A guaranteed, awe-inspiring hour of magic that will entertain both adults and the inner child. Not to be missed.
