Where: Freemason’s Great Hall When: until 17 March Tickets: here You may have seen the Sphere, Las Vegas’ ostentatious LED dome, a new live entertainment space that kicked off its program with a live concert by U2. You can have your own taste of this on our very own North Terrace, within the hallowed halls of our very own Freemason’s. This one is not all LED, instead a set of projectors. I was intrigued by the concept, and when I saw Electric Dreams had programmed artist Jess Johnson, I was immediately in. My first VR experience was a Jess Johnson artwork at the NGV many years ago and I don’t think I’ve quite had such an interesting and immersive experience with VR since. This was a similarly good experience. Jess Johnson creates weird, geometric, psychedelic worlds and transports you into them as a passive visitor. She works with fellow artist Simon Ward and a number of electronic musicians, including Andrew Clarke, Luke Rowell, Stef Animal and Lachlan Anderson, to create the world of XYZZY. As you traverse the world as if on a travelator, things happen around you. Nude bodies dance, buildings collapse, patterns break down, and masked beings attempt to grab you. Johnson and Ward’s artwork is projected around you, and the way you move it feels as if you’re slowly entering the centre of the dome. It’s immersive in a way that I haven’t felt before, and the most interesting use of technology to create art that I have seen in some time.
