Double double, toil and trouble, one actor is drunk and… something something… you know the rest! Sh!tfaced Shakespeare is back once again to put a new spin on a tale as old as the famed writer himself. After rippling laughter across the Garden of Unearthly Delights with Romeo and Juliet in 2023, the classically trained performers are back once again for a rip roaring show, featuring murder, mellowdrama, and masterful improv in Shakespeare’s “Macbeth”. On Feb 22, Prince Malcolm, played by actor, comedian, and award-winning writer David Ellis, took to the stage, fueled by over half a bottle of Smirnoff and two more cans of… spicy water. Much unlike the all-time classic play, the night involved pokemon references, Jeff the dagger, and the famed Macbeth slain by a gluten laced sword, “for thoust has the gluten intolerance”. In the end, the tipsy prince took Macduff as his queen, sealing the betrothal with a beer-tasting kiss. David is a true testament to his craft, portraying gripping dialogue and keeping up with fun choreography despite being intoxicated. Inspiring laughter amongst the rows of eager audience members, the performers blur the lines between serious theatre and skillful improv in an hour of whacky pop culture references and drunken stupor. Though some audiences may not be familiar with the woeful tale of Macbeth, the show perfectly captures the beauty of the play and combines it with a madness most beguiling. Tactfully allowing for moments of improv amongst the beautifully written script, the performers are truly masters of their craft.
