One of the absolute pleasures of any arts festival is taking a chance on the unknown; just plugging a date and time into the website and taking a punt. Sometimes it works out, sometimes it doesn’t, but it always gives you something to talk about in the morning. Reuben Solo fits that category exactly: you’ll either love him or loathe him, but it’s highly, highly unlikely you’ll find yourself without anything to say about him. So what to say about Solo? Start by describing his comedy as ‘teenage bedroom’: there are rituals, catch-phrases and in-jokes repeated to the point of almost insanity. Absurd(ist) is another good word. As is surreal. And discombobulating. Throw in a bit of Jedi mind-controlling (honestly, the man can get his audience to do anything). But don’t forget to say it’s also flipping brilliant. Circuitous gags worm their way into your brain, crowd work is off the chart nonsense, the call back is a literal call back and when James the Tech joins him on stage, well, well, well. This show makes no sense, and it doesn’t need to. It’s a wild ride through Solo’s brain and that, friends, is a ride worth taking. The moral of the story? Always take the punt. You never know where you might end up: in this case, cry laughing at a fool of a comedian performing a military salute to the world’s highest mic stand. No regrets.
