YOAH by CIRQUEWORK made its Australian premiere this year and its Japan’s most exciting offering of electro Circus. From the very first moment when the lights were dimmed in The Moa tent we felt the tingles of excitement and for one hour, which goes by so quick, its non-stop of acrobatics, aerial stunts, contortionist, diabolo juggling, video and visual effects as well as light hearted comedy with lots of ‘woah’ moments! Its storytelling with drama, subtlety and emotion. The stunning backdrop of the flashing visual lighting was a perfect element get the sense of urgency or the sombre mood of the acts. Whether it was the beautiful and subtle intricacy of twists and turns on the silk ropes or the dramatic tension of the swinging, flipping, spinning and twirling high on the trapeze or ferocious acts of juggling that made the audience gasp, this show had it all! For those that don’t know the diabolo is a juggling or circus prop consisting of an axle and two cups or discs derived from the Chinese yo-yo. The ones used in YOAH are lit up creating a colourful and spectacular light display with juggled. They were spun, flipped and caught with sheer delight and you couldn’t help but also feel that delight. YOAH is a masterful storytelling art in motion show. While it has many of the circus elements it really isn’t your average circus show. Combined with stunning electric visuals and eye popping acrobatics it’s one to put on your must see list!
