Australian actor and writer Rob Carlton has brought his one-man show to his first ever Adelaide Fringe. Both humble and inviting he welcomes the audience in for an old-fashioned night of storytelling. Directed by Darren Gilshenan, this no-frills production feels like catching up with an old friend.
 
Carlton delights in sharing 4 stories from his life, that encapsulates what it is to be human. Each story has a different emotional overtone, but is told with sincerity, wit and charm. After a warm welcome, Carlton begins with a tale about family united on Christmas eve when Grandma falls ill, with limited beds, questions are asked about how close is too close.
 
Our second tale about a twenty-something Carlton, who fell into a paying gig on a movie set, as a continuity officer. Told with verve, this behind the scenes look into movie-making is hilarious. 
 
The third instalment changes mood, when Carlton shares a heartfelt and challenging tale about loss and grief. Thoughtful in his depiction, his retelling of past heartache ends with a grateful heart and plenty of tears.
 
Thankfully Carlton made sure to leave the audience on a high note with a side-splitting story about his audition for ‘Muriel’s Wedding’ the musical. Although he nailed the acting audition, reactions to to the singing portion were less than favourable. 
 
Carlton’s enthusiasm as he recalls each story was pure joy. Magnetic in his delivery, his retelling of a life well-lived is a great way to spend an hour of your time.
