The Godz show has been touring around the country for years. But if you thought that these performers would just go through the motions after performing it hundreds of times, you’d be dead wrong. After what I saw in a sold-out Tuesday night performance, these Godz have not only lifted their act but made it soar above the clouds to the heavens.
Set in The Bunker at Fool’s Paradise, you’ll discover that these aren’t the gods that you learned about in history lessons. No, Apollo (God of music and dance), Dionysus (god of wine), Eros (God of sex), and Hercules (god of strength, son of Zeus) just want to party, drink and outdo each other in every athletic feat. In ancient paintings, you may have seen these Godz sitting around dining tables, lounging about and just looking ethereal. But this show shows you what was really happening behind the scenes.
Chair balancing, aerial displays of strength, head spinning and even nude dancing take place with barely a break in the show. And although each act is amazing to see, it’s the little jokes and mannerisms that stood out to this reviewer. Little nods and winks to the audience, a slight brush of the hair, even a small hand gesture goes to show that the four performers in Headfirst Acrobats take this comedy show very seriously and never let any opportunity for a laugh slip through their fingers. Religiously minded folk may want to look away because Godz takes the elevator to hell and back, even making a stop at Christian Hell along the way, the end result… NUN too good I’m afraid!
Highly polished in more ways than one, you won’t find a cleaner, more immaculate performance than that of the Godz at the Adelaide Fringe. Yes, it may pious some people off, but who knew life on Mount Olympus was so divine!
