In a time before the written word, poetry was spoken through movement. On the surface MATADOR intimo looks like just another burlesque show but, like poetry, this performance has multiple layers of pleasure and pain and it's well worth diving in to the deeper narrative on offer.
Matador celebrates the diversity of love and the creativity of desire. Imagine street dancers urging each other on to new tricks, or contemporary dancers post-class, riffing off each other to reach an almost trance state where the veil between the worlds becomes thin. Here, the boundaries assumed to protect us make way for acceptance. Centaurs transcend gender and the thrust and parry of female bullfighters turns convention on its head, heavy with erotic symbolism that sets the tone from the very start.
Matador’s music is a delicious siren call, connecting the audience to the talented dancers’ interwoven attempts to understand and define love, through sharing, embracing and letting go. This high-energy show invites us all to enjoy the potential of creativity and to take a little bit of hot sauce and compassion home with us.
