The ‘small lone body’ of eight-year-old Shze-Hui Tjoa was broken by the pressure of overbearing parents: The Story Of Body explores the memoir of a woman scarred by years of trauma and subsequent PTSD. The Body and Mind are treated as characters, two sides of a fragmented being.
Shien Hian Lim stands alone on the stage of Dom Polski Jeden amidst shadowy curtains and fluctuating, multi-coloured lights as Body, a being both bound to, and at odds with, Mind. Body is trapped in the past, unable to separate from the piano room that imprisoned it for hours each day. Mind talks over Body, keeping all eyes away from the telling marks of abuse. As Body searches for meaning and feeling, Mind searches for distraction.
In a slam poetry meets mime medium, Lim shows the disconnection trauma imposes on both Mind and Body. With the help of sound effects and lighting changes, Body is shown in all manners of degradation and longing. The Story Of Body is a moving one-person show for adult audiences, an exploration into the dark corners of an abused soul that leaves an unsettling aura for each viewer to unpack.
